Ukrainians with temporary protection in Germany must now register their vehicles with German authorities after 12 months of use. The changes took effect on October 1, 2024, when German authorities canceled previous privileges that allowed Ukrainians to use their cars for more than a year.
To complete the registration, one must have a passport or ID card with Latin letters, a Ukrainian technical passport, valid insurance (German or 'green card'), HU (TÜV) technical inspection, as well as a CoC certificate or an expertise from TÜV or DEKRA.
Financial costs
According to an article on Relocate, the costs of legalizing a vehicle in Germany for refugees are quite significant. Registration with license plate issuance will cost between 50 and 70 euros. The HU technical inspection and emissions check AU cost 150 euros, while obtaining a CoC certificate may require between 70 and 180 euros. The annual vehicle tax will be between 60 and 200 euros based on the car's specifications.
